Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
