No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
